Set in England, Mazarine portrays the boredom of an intelligent wife who is discontented with her lot as the lady of a well-to-do household.

Notes

  • Apart from this novel's serialisations in The Mofussilite in 1845 and 1861, it is not known to have been published or serialised anywhere until the 2004 edition. John Lang had offered the novel to the London publisher Routledge, and he later used part of it in his serial The Detective, without any reference to the earlier serial.

This novel was first published anonymously as a serial in John Lang's Indian newspaper The Mofussilite, commencing in August 1845 and completed by the end of 1845. The novel was republished in the same newspaper in December 1861 under Lang's name. Details of these serialisations are provided on the verso of title page in the 2004 edition.
