      • Author's note: 'To a friend I am indebted for dictated translations of the original, which were, for the most part, subsequently put into regular verse. Some may hold that this departure from the form of the original is not permissable; but, on the other hand, it was thought the distinguishing spirit of Heine could, by this means, be more effectively retained. The language of the original has been given as far as can be in a translation.' J. B. M
