Notes

  • Author's note: Francis was taken to the Portiuncula. Many friars cam to receive his blessing, but there was one 'layman' among them. This was the Lady di Settisoli, a Roman widow whose home Francis and others had visited in Rome in 1212. Little is known of her except her manlike qualities - perhaps a logical brain and a certain forthrightness in speech - which earned her the nickname "Brother Giacoma".
