Researched with streetkids, Woromi Detention Centre inmates, social workers and New South Wales police officers, Joyride explores issues concerning youth crime, antisocial behaviour and violence (perpetrated on and by teenagers), and the social and familial implications and consequences that can arise.

Production Details

  • 1992 : Newcastle ; April (debut). Prod. Zeal Theatre ; Dir. Stefo Nantsou (q.v.). - Cast: Louise Chapman, Rob Dilley, Stefo Nantsou.

    • The production was rehearsed at the Newcastle Police Citizens Youth Club.
    • The play's initial success opened up new touring opportunities for Zeal Theatre around Australia.

    Joyride was staged more than 600 times in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia between 1992 and 1996. It also toured New Zealand twice during that period.

    A concert version was developed in 1996 through assistance from the New South Wales Arts Ministry, and given a stadium production around the Hunter Valley.
