Notes

  • Author's note: 'The poems included in this collection were written from the years from 1945 to 1960... The legendary "Terra Australia Incognita", the land of adventurous explorers and pioneers was replaced by "Terra Australis Cognita", the suburban Backyard Country. The poems are a varied collection... the overall emphasis is on the static, unadventurous way of life in the Backyard County as I experienced it at the time.'
  • Dedication: 'Dedicated to the memory of our ancestors.'
  • Epigraph:

    Dancing in and out of the pulse of years,
    That symbiosis is of the now and then;
    Stepping out the paths of ancient fears,
    Down vistas of the what, the why, the when;

    So we must go, through cycling joys and tears,
    To shape the living substance yet again.
