Author's note: 'The poems making up these Meditations were written and re-wrriten over a period of some twenty years. The original leitmotiv was drawn from Shakespeare's play The Tempest... But the actual plan for this work took final shape only after I had read, first, Georg Simmel's remarkable essay, The Adventure (1911), and then Paul Zweig's stimulating book, The Adventurer: The Fate of Adventure in the Western World (1974). Other existing poems immediately took their place in the plan.'
