Note: Epigraph: During the battle of El Agheila in the Western Desert an Eighth Army soldier found a piece of paper on which was written some verses, considered to be among the finest produced by the present war. His Prayer has been preserved in a recently published volume Poems from the Desert by Members of the Eightth Army (Harrap, London).
