Shuttleworth describes A Good Arriving as a 'detailed believable and vivid portrait of England in the early nineteenth century'. He comments that it is a 'story about the ability to endure and overcome adversity' but that the move from 'social realism to gothic' may ultimately have been a missed oportunity to say something further about our past.
