Mead examines the theoretical implications of editing The Broad Arrow with several 'versions' that have been influenced by the requirements of publishers (revision and shortening) and later versions that include illustrations and references to Marcus Clarke's His Natural Life. Mead sees the significance of gender in these publications and encourages readers to recognize these elements in the history of the text during evaluation and interpretation.
