'Jen's dad died in the war. Now her mum has a new friend Wal, who definitely doesn't match up in Jen's eyes to her handsome, war hero dad. Handsome is important. Jen's girlfriends give Wal a rating of 3 out of 10, maybe 4 with his shiny new car. When her mother announces that she is going to marry Wal, Jen is horrified.
