  • Theatre lovers will have the chance to see the tragedian, Mr James Anderson, perform as Othello this evening. Mr Anderson has won acclaim in England and has been performing in Melbourne. Although he attracted some 'narrow-minded and one-sided' criticism, the writer is sure he will please Ballarat audiences, 'who generally patronise true merit'.
  • Bachelder's diorama has become so popular that many patrons were unable to gain admittance on Saturday night. This evening's entire proceeds are being donated to the hospital and the two asylums. Mr Bachelder is giving a number of performances especially for children and children from the Benevolent and Orphan Asylum will be admitted free to his Wednesday afternoon performance.

— Appears in: The Ballarat Courier , Tuesday, 27 August no. 68 1867; (p. 3) A lengthy and detailed review of Mr Anderson's portrayal of Othello. While largely favourable the reviewer feels that Mr Anderson displayed an indiscriminate use of 'declamatory power' in some of the scenes. He commends other actors in the performance, although he states that the casting of Desdomona was a mistake.

Mr Anderson's portrayal of Richard was excellent and showed a deep understanding of the complexities of character. The supporting actors were adequate, but showed no outstanding features.

The reviewer considers it the best Mr Anderson has offered while in Ballarat. Shortage of space prevents a longer notice, but a full review will be given after the next performance.
Theatre Royal : Macbeth 1867 single work review
— Appears in: The Ballarat Courier , Saturday, 31 August no. 72 1867; (p. 2) A laudatory review of the previous night's performance of Macbeth. The reviewer finds no fault with Mr Anderson's portrayal of Macbeth and is of the opinion that it is almost 'the Shakespearian student's ideal of the character'. The audience was appreciative and particularly enjoyed the sword play, which brought down the gallery and, in the opinion of the reviewer, 'showed that few things are more acceptable to a British audience than a good hand-to-hand fight'.
Theatre Royal : Hamlet 1867 single work review
— Appears in: The Ballarat Courier , Thursday, 29 August no. 70 1867; (p. 2) An unenthusiastic review of Mr Anderson's portrayal of Hamlet. The reviewer states that, while the actor's interpretation of Hamlet is that he was mad, he gives this idea too great a prominence at the expense of Hamlet's more subtle character traits. For example, the reviewer suggests that in the speeches where Hamlet laments the death of his father 'a tone of dignified sorrow would be sufficient, without those convulsive gulpings' more suited to a 'lower style of acting'.
