Author's note: This radio play is a free adaptation of an old English poem called 'The Wife's Lament.' Written in the tenth century, it is a fify three line dramatic monologue, one of the works included in The Exeter Book. The author is unknown. The author's conclusion, whether the wife stoically endures or calls down a curse, is open to interpretation.

This play was commissioned by Airplay Radio National, as part of a series entitled 'Old Texts Revisited.'
