AbstractHistoryArchive Description
'In this chapter I discuss some aspects of my translation of Alice Pung's best-selling Australian novel Unpolished Gem, considering which constraining elements - both in Pung's creative writing process and in my translation - represented challenges and pushed author and translator to creatively overcome the limits imposed by those constraints' (p. 89).
Notes
-
Epigraph: [Creative writers] are bound by all manners of constraints: political, social, poetic and linguistic, as well as the constraints of the text itself, which creates a context potentially confining and determining the form and meaning of every utterance... For in fact creativity is often intimately tied to a constraint, it is a response to it, it is enhanced by it... Constraints in this sense can be seen as one of the main sources of creativity. -- Boase-Beier and Holman, The Practices of Literary Translation (1999)
