The Taronga Foundation Poetry Prize was inaugurated in 2003 and was jointly founded by Bradley Trevor Greive and Ron Pretty. The intention of the prize is to bring together the themes of poetry and nature.
The competition is open to all Australians up to and including the age of 18 and is awarded in three age categories: Junior Prize (12 years and under), Intermediate Prize (13-15 years inclusive), Senior Prize (all ages up to 18 years inclusive) and one overall category, the Wildlife Prize. The Wildlife Prize is awarded for the most outstanding poem dealing with issues of wildlife preservation and the environment.
All entries receive written recognition, 'with winning and commended entries sharing in over $13 000 worth of prizes including: $5 000 in cash prizes, copies of leading poetry and wildlife books, free passes to Australia's premier zoos/nature attractions as well as certificates and trophies. The best entries will also be published in an anthology by Random House Australia.'
