  • Frequently Asked Questions

  • —How do I access AustLit?

AustLit is a subscription database. A twelve month subscription provides full access for the entire school community, staff and students, onsite and offsite, by password, IP recognition, or, if you prefer students to access resources from behind a school portal, we can arrange access via URL referral.

We are happy to enter into consortium arrangements and provide significant discounts for multiple schools subscribing. The AustLit team can also provide professional development services to teachers.

If you would like to discuss subscription options please contact the AustLit team at: info-austlit@austlit.edu.au.

  • —Can I trial AustLit before subscribing?

Yes, we can set up guest access for a one month trial for you and your school. Please contact the AustLit team at: info-austlit@austlit.edu.au to discuss trail access.

Yes. While not all the records in AustLit contain access to full text, many thousands do. This might include early out of copyright works digitised by AustLit, author interviews, and links to critical works. AustLit also publishes its own full-text critical works, and digitises otherwise unavailable works.

  • —Why can't I use the State Libraries AustLit subscription for my teaching?

Public and municipal library access to AustLit is for personal research only. The licence agreements prohibit use for educational purposes and/or in the classroom. AustLit relies on subscription income to keep the database relevant.

The licence agreement for schools is available here.

Visit the About AustLit page for information on Licensing.

  • —Does AustLit run professional development PD events for teachers?

Yes, currently AustLit offers an annual 'Teaching with AustLit' event that focuses on an aspect of Australian literature and drama. We are hoping to provide webinars in the near future.

Read more at our Professional Learning with AustLit page.

  • —How can I respectfully use Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories for educational purposes?

It is important to employ appropriate language when discussing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories and storytellers. Please read the BlackWords Teaching site for guidance.
