— Appears in: Journal of Postcolonial Writing , December vol. 52 no. 5 2016; (p. 622-633) Mediating Literary Borders : Asian Australian Writing 2018; (p. 96-108) 'This article argues that Adib Khan’s fiction challenges the orthodoxies of rigid cultural boundaries and dominator systems by creatively reconfiguring histories, landscapes and identities into forms of transcultural dialogue. Both Homecoming (2003) and Spiral Road (2007) tell the story of the disquieted lives of their protagonists, Martin and Masud, who struggle to inhabit an empathetic consciousness in a world ranked and measured by labels, points of origin, skin colour and religion. Their sense of displacement and yearning to belong – a feature in all Khan’s novels – enable them to move beyond the anxieties of finding a fitting place within the culture around them and embrace new ways of overcoming disconnection, violence and other forms of cultural stereotyping common to all cultures, thus rethinking their past and recreating a more equitable future.' 1 ‘No Better or Worse than Anyone, but an Equal’ : Negotiating Mutuality in Adib Khan’s 'Seasonal Adjustments' Stefano Mercanti , 2012 single work criticism
— Appears in: JASAL , vol. 12 no. 2 2012; In this article, after a brief consideration of the limitations revolving around South Asian Australian writers as an under-researched literary category, I use Riane Eisler’s partnership and dominator models to explore the complexities of cultural belonging, seen as a new narrative of unique experience, through which a distinctive transcultural identity is fluidly forged beyond the expectations and ideals of dominant nationalist cultures and traditions. By particularly focusing on Adib Khan’s novel Seasonal Adjustments, this analysis suggests that his migrant identity should be understood as a dialectical ever-growing process, enabling him to link cultural differences as transcultural global constants. They analyse the concept of Id-Entities from a range of perspectives, through the contributions of writers, scholars and researchers in various disciplines - literature, applied linguistics, education and language teaching - and give evidence of 'other' possible patterns of construction of the self and forms of coexistence generated by non-hierarchical relational processes. The title, Partnership Id-Entities, signals the discursive grounds for exploring intercultural relationships within an equalitarian and mutual paradigm and points to the need of a more profound awareness of transnational dialogue and modalities of cooperation based on a common ground of shared values in world cultural traditions' (Source: Publisher website).
