Clare Carlin grew up in Perth, Western Australia. She has worked as a journalist since 1999. In 2005 she completed a Master of Arts in English at the Australian National University, with a thesis on the short stories of Mena Abdullah and Jhumpa Lahiri, under the supervision of Lucy Neave. As of 2014, Carlin was based in London where she works as a freelance journalist.
