'Rumours ... regarding the ultimate disposal of the Old Theatre', i.e. the Theatre Royal, Sydney. One of the rumours is a report of a possible sale of the 'premises attached to the Old Theatre, which includes the Royal Hotel and Shakespeare Tavern.'

A column (by William Kerr?) on the 'arrangements for the commencement' of the new season at the Royal Victoria Theatre, Sydney. Improvements in the 'construction of the stage and the disposition of the scenery' had been undertaken by James Belmore (? - 1834) 'the talented Hobart Town mechanist'. The 'handsome new drop scene .. by Messrs. Fitchett and Strong, of Pitt-street' was completed as well as a 'saloon attached to the dress circle'. Of the company of actors Conrad Knowles and Harriet Jones had been engaged but the actresses Maria Taylor and Mrs Larra and the actor Lane had, according to the writer, not been re-engaged. An actor, Mr Winters (possibly Jemmy Winters), is also mentioned as well as changes in the orchestra. '[George?] Peck is engaged as leader, and Wilson and Sippe added ... to the orchestra, while Dean [John Philip Deane] and his talented boys are excluded.' The first performance of the new season was to be Shakespeare's Hamlet, with Knowles as Hamlet and Eliza Winstanley as Ophelia, and 'an amusing farce called Bachelors' Buttons, which has never before been played in the Colony.'

The author (William Kerr?) discusses the upcoming benefit at the Royal Victoria Theatre, Sydney, for the actors Cordelia Cameron and Samson Cameron. In the column he notes that the 'play selected for [the benefit of Mr and Mrs Cameron] ... is ... The Massacre of Jerusalem, in which the author, a Mr Morris Phillips, who has recently arrived from London, makes his first appearance in this colony ... The first piece which ... is especially licensed for the occasion, has never yet been published'. The Massacre of Jerusalem is listed first in the advertisements for the benefit.

The author (William Kerr?) discusses the merits of both actors writing that he does not 'know no two performers on the stage who have stronger claims on the liberality of the public ... Mrs Larra, independent altogether of her claims as an actress, which are second to none on the stage, has a strong hold on the affections of the people from her long residence in the Colony ... Miss Winstanley is without exception, the most rising actress on the stage. She made her debut in theatrical life in Sydney ...'.

A short report on Maria Taylor's benefit in which the plays presented by the Royal Victoria Theatre are briefly discussed. Maria Taylor (ca. 1813-1841) was an actress in nineteenth century Sydney. The author (William Kerr?) also alludes to Taylor's conduct '... on Tuesday evening last ... with the hope that we may never witness a repetition of such behaviour...'
