An Australian-Japanese co-production written by Terry Larsen and directed by Andrew Prowse, Ultraman: Towards the Future was an update of Tsuburaya Productions' Ultraman character, who first appeared in a 1966 television series. The series draws from the Japanese genres of tokusatsu ('superheroes') and kaiju ('strange beasts'/monsters).

Two astronauts, part of the first manned expedition to Mars, witness a battle between the enormous humanoid Ultraman and the slug-like Goudis, during the course of which one of the astronauts is killed. When Ultraman is on the verge of victory, Goudis transforms into a virus and travels to Earth. Needing a human host to survive on Earth, Ultraman melds with the surviving astronaut, Jack Shindo. On Earth, Jack joins the Universal Multipurpose Agency (UMA) to fight Goudis and the other monsters that it has created or awoken.

The program has a strong environmental overtone, with many episodes including environmental themes and the temporal limitations of Ultraman's powers being explained by the Earth's polluted atmosphere.

Kev and Big Dog do their rounds every day, collecting scraps from the neighbourhood garbage bins and then beautifying the suburb with murals. Four-year-old Mary likes to help, but Mary will soon have to go to school. Kev decorates the schoolyard with tarflower murals, to the horror of the school authorities. But just as they're about to punish Kev, the tarflowers burst into life, so everyone can see their magic.

According to Patricia Edgar,

The film was to be shot on videotape as the special effects would have been expensive to produce on film. [...] When I came to Sydney to check on the production, Tom was worried about the coverage the director was achieving. Every scene was filmed in a long take, with no close-ups; the director said it was a personal style, but it meant that, when the scenes came together, the film was about thirty minutes longer than it should have been. The only way to shorten it was to cut out scenes completely, and then the film didn't make sense. I had to sack the director and try to make sense of the footage we had. Anne Brooksbank was brought in to write a narration to unify the film. Geoff Bennett, who had done well with On Loan and was available at very short notice, became a consultant director.

Set in a small, fictional, New South Wales country town called Wandin Valley, A Country Practice focused on the staffs of the town's medical practice and local hospital and on the families of the doctors, nurses, and patients. Many of the episodes also featured guest characters (frequently patients served by the practice) through whom various social and medical problems were explored. Although often considered a soap opera, the series was not built around an open-ended narrative; instead, the two one-hour episodes screened per week formed a self-contained narrative block, though many of the storylines were developed as sub-plots for several episodes before becoming the focus of a particular week's storyline. While the focus was on topical issues such as youth unemployment, suicide, drug addiction, HIV/AIDS, and terminal illness, the program did sometimes explore culturally sensitive issues, including, for example, the Aboriginal community and their place in modern Australian society.

Among the show's principal characters were Dr Terence Elliott, local policeman Sergeant Frank Gilroy, Esme Watson, Shirley Dean Gilroy, Bob Hatfield, Vernon 'Cookie' Locke, and Matron Margaret 'Maggie' Sloan. In addition to its regularly rotating cast of characters, A Country Practice also had a cast of semi-regulars who would make appearances as the storylines permitted. Interestingly, while the series initially targeted the adult and older youth demographic, it became increasingly popular with children over the years.
