BiographyHistory

Albert Barunga was an Aboriginal Elder and community leader of the Worrorra people. He was born near Derby, Western Australia. After his father died in 1919, Barunga worked on a fishing and pearling boat before being taken to taken to the Kunmunya Presbyterian Mission where he formed a close association with Reverend Robert Love. During World War II, Barunga worked as a coast guide to the American and Australian armed services.

Barunga became a leading councillor at Mowanjum. He was also active on other State and Federal committees, and became a spokesperson both in Western Australia and in Canberra.
