Note: Editor's note: Colin Thornton-Smith introduces and translates this short story by Paul Maistre; it is one of five of stories published in the Madrid-based Nouvelle Revue Internationale between 1894 and 1897. At the time Maistre was Vice-consul of France in Melbourne and, using a pseudonym, he makes some pertinent comments upon the financial crises which brought about the demise of "Marvellous Melbourne" in the 1890s.
