Saxby remembers Southall as an innovative author and deems him 'one of the foremost writers of the modern era in Australian children's literature'. A prolific and award-winning author, Southall was also a member of the Order of Australia and the recipient of a number of awards in regards to his contribution to children's literature. Southall's skill, says Saxby, was to present life 'honestly, without sentimentality or intentional bias, without denying man's humanity, or glorifying it'

Turton is interested in the fact that people do not always read the same way and subsequently asks two experienced reviewers to review Odo Hirsch's Darius Bell and the Glitter Pool (2009) as an example of how 'perception and emphasis may or may not vary'. She includes a number of quotes about the reviewing process, such as 'First and foremost a reviewer should recognise that his/her first responsibility is to the reader' ('Magpies Guide to Reviewing')

Turton reviews the re-issue of Peter Pavey's first picture book, One Dragon's Dream, which she argues retains its originality and creativity as an 'exquisitely executed book' of 'sheer imaginative power'.

The pouquoi story of how birds got there colors has been re-released by Magabala Books (Broome, Western Australia) with some slight changes to the text and illustrations as well as an updated design layout.
